Showboat Mansion

A private residential flat at Showboat Mansion, in Quarry Bay on Hong Kong Island. A pale grey timber finish carries from the living room through to the bedrooms, with walls, cabinet fronts and concealed doors all brought flush into one plane; the palette holds to grey, white and timber, with a single set of black-framed glass sliding doors as the only linear contrast.

Hong Kong Island · Eastern District · 600 sq ft · Modern minimalist · Private residential

One whole wall of the living room is finished in pale grey timber, with the television wall-mounted and its cabling chased in, and black-framed glass sliders leading through alongside. Tall units with open shelving run to the ceiling by the window, keeping all the storage on one side.

A door is concealed within the same panelled wall, its joint cut along the direction of the grain so it all but disappears when closed. Two downlights are all that wash the surface, which brings out the vertical grain.

A row of wall cabinets sits above the bed head, with open shelving left below for books and objects. The joinery matches the wall tone, and the deep blue curtain is the only strong colour in the room.

In the second bedroom the bed is raised on a timber platform, with concealed lighting along its edge so the main light need not be switched on at night. The head of the bed again carries shelving with an integrated light channel, putting the reading light inside the joinery.
