Pak Kong San Tsuen
A village house project in Pak Kong, Sai Kung. Dark solid timber flooring runs through the whole house, with the stair handrail and the door frames finished in the same wood; the living room opens into a run of full-height glazing that draws the trees outside straight into the room.
A full wall of glazing brings the trees outside into the room, and timber finishes tie the ceiling and the walls together; the dark floor anchors the palette, giving the village house a settled feel.
The treads are finished in dark timber and the handrail runs in one line to the top; the wall is left plain and undecorated, so the route up and down reads more clearly.
Full-height white wardrobes with mirrored sliding doors line the room, and the mirrors return the window light to make it feel wider; the ceiling conceals the air-conditioning ductwork, so no unit is on show.
The corridor is trimmed with dark wood door frames, with rooms on one side and the staircase on the other; the frames and the floor share the same colour, so the route reads as continuous.
A timber grid bookcase runs wall to wall, its openings in different sizes so that books and objects can be arranged freely; the glazed cabinet beside it takes whatever is better kept out of sight.
The bedroom door is dark timber with an arched glass panel, so light comes through from outside; the timber-slat ceiling continues into the room, and the plain white walls leave the timber to stand out.
The ceiling is lined throughout with timber battens, and the walls are divided between ribbed panelling and stone; the room needs little extra furniture, as the materials carry it on their own.
Dark stone-effect tiles cover the bathroom walls, set against a dark timber vanity and a stone basin; a brass tap and a light strip behind the mirror give a small room some depth.
