Banyan Garden

A private residential flat at Banyan Garden, in Cheung Sha Wan in Kowloon. The owners are figure collectors with young children, so the whole scheme is arranged around letting a collection and family life share the same rooms: continuous glazed display cabinets with integral lighting run along the walls of the living and dining areas, turning the collection into the wall surface itself, while everything else is held to white and pale timber so the figures supply the only colour in the flat.

Kowloon · Sham Shui Po · 658 sq ft · Modern minimalist · Private residential

Glazed display cabinets with integral lighting flank one side of the television wall, closed off by a white feature panel on the other with circular openings cut into it. A low platform is built beneath the television for the children to sit on, and its side doubles as drawers.

The living room keeps its floor clear, with the sofa against the wall and a play mat laid in the middle for the children. A run of low cabinets by the window stores toys at a height the children can reach themselves.

The feature panel is white, with a character silhouette and circles of varying size cut through it and lit from behind. The glazed cabinet alongside is divided into lit tiers with dark backing boards, so the pale figures read clearly against them.

Glazed display runs along three sides of the dining area, with a timber-lined ceiling above to tie them together. A glass table and children’s chairs sit in the middle, so the family eats surrounded by the collection.

The children’s wardrobe is split white above and pale blue below, the lower doors printed with pitch markings and a number. The doors are handleless and push to open, so there is no ironmongery for a child to knock into.

The bedroom door is changed to a slider, its leaves decorated with line-drawn characters that form one complete picture when closed. Timber framing alternates with the white panels so the drawing does not overwhelm the room.
